In
January 2005 I travelled from Krakow to Oswiecim (formerly known
as Auschwitz) and back. I was moved by my journey, not least
because of the certainty of my return, in contrast to the victims
of Auschwitz for whom there was no return.
My feelings are captured in these ‘chance’ photographs,
taken from a moving vehicle as I passed through the landscape.
The photographs are deliberately blurred by movement and are consciously
out of time, conflating the contemporary and the historical. I
created a book of the photographs as my personal memorial to the
victims. This was exhibited as part of a joint exhibition with
Lithuanian students in Siaulai and Norwich.
I took no photographs at Auschwitz.
